What you can do

  1. Ask your child who sent an invitation and what the server is for. Is it for friends, a particular game or a larger community?
  2. Talk about the difference between a server’s shared chat and a private message. Your child does not have to keep talking just because the other person plays the same game.
  3. Agree who your child can contact about demands for secrecy, images or money. An adult can help end contact and report it.

Avoid

  • Listen first, without blaming or shaming your child.
  • Do not forward private messages, intimate images or explicit screenshots.
  • No app can protect against everything. Do not promise that it can.

For parents

Make clear that your child can get help even if they have broken an agreement.
