What you can do
- Look at your child’s Instagram profile and a post together. Who should be able to see it, and which details does your child want to keep private?
- Use Instagram’s own help to find settings for a private account, messages and supervision. Show your child what adults can access through the settings you choose.
- Discuss a message request from someone unfamiliar. Your child can leave it unanswered and ask for help without showing you every private conversation.
Avoid
- Listen first, without blaming or shaming your child.
- Do not forward private messages, intimate images or explicit screenshots.
- No app can protect against everything. Do not promise that it can.
For parents
Make clear that your child can get help even if they have broken an agreement.
